After spending some time in the Qantas Business Lounge I headed to the gate for the flight to Brisbane. Surprisingly, the priority boarding was actually being enforced, that’s something you don’t always see. The flight wasn’t too full and there were around 4 or 5 seats free in Business and there were quite a few free rows in Economy.

The A330’s Business Cabin is in a 1-2-1 configuration consisting of 28 seats. The suites are a custom Thompson XL Vantage design. For my flight, I chose to sit in 4A.

As you arrive at your seat you’ll find the menu and eye-shades. Trans-con flights in Australia don’t receive full amenity kits, even on the redeye services.

The thing that was most disappointing about the flight was the menu. The supper service isn’t supposed to be big as most people choose to sleep anyway, but the breakfast selection was very limited.

In the side of your seat, you’ll find a chilled bottle of water and a pair of noise canceling headphones. I would recommend taking your own as these were quite flimsy and didn’t fit particularly well.

Beneath that, you’ll find the in-seat power points, USB power, and a headphone jack. To the left of that, you’ll find the seat controls.

Probably the coolest thing about the seat is that it has the ability to be slightly reclined for both takeoff and landing. The seat controls are easy to use and also include a do not disturb button, massage function, and lighting controls.

The footwell is quite narrow and might be bothersome for some taller passengers.

The seat does have a sash belt which has to be done up for both takeoff and landing.

On the right of you, you’ll find the IFE remote control and small makeup mirror.

Shortly after settling in, a member of the cabin crew introduced herself and offered a pre-departure beverage. On Qantas’s trans-con flights the offer Maggie Beer non-alcoholic sparkling ruby cabernet which is really nice but you have to have it very chilled as it’s very sweet.

The flight departed Perth on time and we reached our cruising altitude of 35,000 feet. The crew started the meal service shortly after. I elected to have the Quiche and some iced water.

As it was a red-eye and I was quite tired. I went to sleep pretty much straight after having ”dinner”. The bed is comfortable and for the Asia flights they will provide you with a mattress topper which is really nice. I woke up 30 minutes before the start of our descent, again, the meal options are pretty limited but at least the fruit was fresh and the coffee was good.

We landed in Brisbane exactly on time and had a short taxi to our gate.

Bottom Line

Qantas’s A330 suites are a good hard product, would I take them over a Super Diamond seat? No, but I’m not saying it’s a bad product. What was disappointing about the flight was the soft product. I’m sure it’s better on the day flights but it was very disappointing. I’m going to give them another chance on a day flight and see if it’s a better offering. The crew were some of the best I’ve had on Qantas and they did a great job.
