How To Transfer Virgin Australia Velocity Points To Singapore Airlines Krisflyer

Yesterday Virgin Australia won awards for having the best elite program and award availability in Oceania. As they won the awards, I thought I might talk a little bit about why the program is great. Yes, it’s not the most generous frequent flyer program in the world but in Australia, it’s quite a compelling program for travellers.

The first thing I thought I’d talk about is the ability to transfer Velocity points over to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer. This is possibly my favourite feature of the program and it’s one I use quite often.

The ability to transfer airline miles to another program is quite rare (unless they’re merging). The ability to transfer Velocity points to Krisflyer opens a MASSIVE range of redemption options, both on Singapore Airlines and all 27 other Star Alliance carriers.

By transferring points to Krisflyer, that then enables you to book Singapore Airlines Suites which is only able to be booked through Krisflyer.

As well as that, rates for travel on Singapore Airlines booking through Krisflyer are usually lower than Velocity and the taxes are often smaller.

As I mentioned before, you have 28 Star Alliance airlines to choose from when redeeming miles. Travelling on Thai Airways in both First and Business Class is a great way to spend Krisflyer miles.

Another fantastic redemption is Lufthansa’s First Class. If you’re departing Frankfurt you can access the private First Class terminal, get driven to the aircraft in a Porsche and consume as much Caviar as your body desires.

So how do I transfer Velocity points to Krisflyer?

When you log into your Velocity account and are brought to the main dashboard, you’ll want to find the ‘Points Transfer – Airlines’ tab and select ‘More Info’.

You’ll then be directed to link your Krisflyer account. All you have to do is enter your Krisflyer account and if the details match, it will be linked instantly. Once you’ve successfully linked your accounts all you have to do is press ‘transfer now’.

On this page, you’ll be able to select how many points you wish to transfer. The transfer rate from Velocity to Krisflyer is 1.35:1 which isn’t too bad. Once you’ve press ‘transfer’ your points will be transferred instantly and will be in your Krisflyer account as soon as you log into it. The minimum amount you can transfer is 5000.

You can also transfer Krisflyer points to Velocity

If you have some spare Krisflyer points or want to reverse your previous transfer, do not worry, you can also transfer your points from Krisflyer to Velocity. The process is the exact same and the transfer rate this time will be 1.35 Krisflyer miles to 1 Velocity point. All you need to do is find the ‘Miles’ tab then select ‘How To Use’ and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page where you’ll find the Velocity transfer tab.

Once you press proceed, your miles will appear in your Velocity account instantly.

Transferring miles between programs provides excellent variation in redemption partners and is a very valuable perk to have.
