Qantas Has Revamped Their Domestic Economy Menus

Airlines are always altering and changing their in-flight menus, mostly for the better but it can be sometimes bad. Both Qantas and Virgin Australia update their menus often but Qantas’s domestic meals are a lot bigger than what Virgin serve and are more of a meal rather than a snack, that’s the case on most services. In Business Class, they’re basically the same size.

From 2014, Qantas have been serving boxed meals in the Economy cabin, then at the end of last year, Qantas increased the size of the Economy meals by 50%. The new menus come into affect from today.

Qantas Domestic Economy Meals

Per Qantas,

Breakfast – (from 5:00 am till 8:59 am)

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. From a hearty hot breakfast to something lighter, we have a selection of breakfast items to start your day. Customers can enjoy our breakfast boxes, such as apple, amaranth and mixed berry bites from Spotted Cow or Ruby & Roy’s new yoghurt flavours – blood orange; pineapple, lime and ginger; boysenberry and apple and pink grapefruit. Hot breakfast options include items such as ham, scrambled egg and hollandaise toasted ciabatta from Enroute or bacon and sundried tomato quiche from Simmone Logue.

Snacks – (morning, 9:00 am until 11:59 am and for afternoon, 1:31 pm until 5:29 pm)

Customers on board morning services can treat themselves to light snacks such as a lamington with Rosella jelly cookie from Byron Bay Cookie Co, developed in conjunction with Christine Manfield or a rainforest plum chocolate slice from Dreamtime Tuka – a leading supplier of bush food products, linking both nutritional value and cultural wealth of Indigenous foods nationally and internationally.

Main Meals – (lunch from 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm and dinner from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm)

We have a variety of hot and cold gourmet dishes inspired by Neil Perry’s Rockpool, available to customers on selected lunch and dinner services. Customers can enjoy a hot meal such as a spicy pulled pork sandwich with wedges or a Moroccan vegetable tagine. For those who prefer a lighter main meal can enjoy our salads made from fresh and seasonal ingredients such as poached chicken with ancient grains or caponata pasta with crumbled feta.

Supper – (from 8:01 pm until 4:59 am)

Customers travelling on our evening services can cap off the day with our light supper selections such as savoury boxes from Charlie’s Cookies. For every box Qantas serves, 5 cents will be donated to Ovarian Cancer Australia, supported by Charlie’s Cookies. For those with a sweet tooth can delight in Calippo ice cream available in raspberry pineapple, tropical and orange lime, offered on selected flights.

Overall

This is a nice welcome change for passengers travelling in Economy on domestic services. It’s always nice to have something different and not have to eat the same thing over and over again.

Just flew with Qantas to Perth return. Strangest food I’ve ever had. Beef something on flight home. Very odd food. Time to change the menu Qantas to ordinary food.

The meals might be larger but it is just an exercise in meal bulking by Qantas. Very monolithic flavoured in economy. Beware the sweet and sour pork dish. The snacks are just plain revolting. Better off having less on Virgin.

I flew from Perth to Melbourne and had the lunch menu where I chose a cold roast pumpkin salad with feta and some chick peas I think?
It was delicious and I’ve been looking for the recipe, would anyone happen to know it?

Just don’t see how it’s supper time 8pm.
Normally if I work full day I struggle to get on earlier than 7pm but more likely bit later than that and just getting a bag of pretzels then just don’t cut it. There should be at least optional sandwich offer.
