A few months ago, Virgin Australia announced that they will launch services to Hong Kong. In 2016, the carrier also announced plans to partner with the HNA group. This meant the Virgin Australia group and HNA Aviation would have a greater reach into Asia and Australia. HNA Aviation is the largest private group of airlines in Asia, they own airlines like Hainan, Hong Kong Airlines, Tianjin Airlines etc.

There hasn’t been a massive amount of information regarding the codeshare agreement until now. Virgin Australia has just announced that they will codeshare with Hong Kong Airlines. Virgin will codeshare on Hong Kong Airlines’ flights to Hong Kong from Cairns and The Gold Coast, Passengers coming off Hong Kong Airlines flights from Hong Kong will be able to easily connect onto 11 destinations in Australia and New Zealand with Virgin.

These are the following routes that will have the codeshare, Melbourne – Hong Kong, Gold Coast – Auckland, Melbourne – Christchurch, Melbourne – Auckland, Melbourne – Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Sydney, Gold Coast and Darwin. Sydney – Gold Coast and Cairns, Brisbane – Cairns and Gold Coast – Adelaide.

Virgin Australia 737-800

If you’re flying on the Hong Kong Airlines flights that have the Virgin codeshare, you’ll be able to earn both Velocity points and status credits. The same goes for Fortune Wings Club when flying on the Virgin Australia codeshare flights. The two have just announced points and status earning but haven’t yet released information regarding lounge access.

The first route that will have the new codeshare will be the inaugural Virgin Australia service from Melbourne to Hong Kong from July the 5th. The flight number is – VA87/HX3001.

Virgin Australia A330

The airline submitted their application to the ACCC a few weeks ago and this is what has been granted so far. We’ll be able to find out more when it’s completed in July.

If everything is ok with the application and it gets approved, this means further expansion and into mainland Asia.
