Virgin Australia commenced their Melbourne to Hong Kong services on July 5th of this year with their A330 aircraft. The service started of as 5 times a week however, when the airline first announced the service back in March they said they wanted to increase services to daily but at the time they didn’t have the required slots at both airports to do so.
Yesterday, the carrier announced that they will now commence the Melbourne – Hong Kong service from 5 times weekly to daily commencing on the 12th of November. The airline will continue to utilise their A330-200 for the service.
Here is the following schedule for the service:
VA87 will depart Melbourne at 11:00am every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and will arrive into Hong Kong at 5:35pm.
VA87 will depart Melbourne at 12:40pm every Friday and arrive into Hong Kong at 7:15pm.
VA87 will depart Melbourne at 11:30am every Sunday and arrive into Hong Kong at 6:05pm.
VA86 will depart Hong Kong at 7:50pm every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and arrive into Melbourne at 8:15am the next day.
VA86 will depart Hong Kong at 8:45pm every Friday and arrive into Melbourne at 9:10am the next day.
VA86 will depart Hong Kong at 7:55pm every Sunday and arrive into Melbourne at 8:20am the next day.
Virgin Australia A330-200
For those not familiar with Virgin Australia’s A330’s, they’re in a 2 class configuration with Business and Economy Class. They feature 20 B/E Super Diamond seats in a 2 class configuration. The aircraft also features 255 Economy seats which are in a 2-4-2 configuration. Each seat have a pitch of 31” and a width of 17.4.”
As for lounges, Virgin use the Etihad lounge in Melbourne.

And in Hong Kong they use the Hong Kong Airlines Club Autus lounge.
Ultimately this is great news for Virgin Australia passengers wanting to go to Hong Kong. This is also great news for people wanting to use points as hopefully there will be more availability.

I have flown this route 4 times so far and each the loads have been pretty light. According to the flight attendant, the cargo business is booming and their hulls are “chokka” and up front business class is usually always full of revenue passengers. So I think this will be a long term route for Virgin. Their partnership with Hong Kong Airlines has been beneficial for Virgin as they are being fed by many Chinese passengers from the mainland.
