Qantas Announce Melbourne To San Fransisco Services

Today is quite a significant day for Qantas as they launch their first international 787 route, name their second 787 aircraft and on top of that, they’ve just announced a new International route with the Dreamliner. QF95 will depart from Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport at 2:25 this afternoon and arrive into Los Angeles at 9:45am local time.

The new Melbourne – San Fransisco service is quite a surprising one and it’s a route that I didn’t expect the carrier to launch or even consider. It’s not a secret that Qantas loves the United States and it’s nice to see them expand again. This is fantastic competition for United as they’re the only other carrier that currently flies this route.

For along time American Airlines was rumoured to launch Melbourne services from Los Angeles but we haven’t heard anything for quite sometime about that, the airlines may have just settled and agreed to let Qantas take this route. Remember American has already reduced the amount of seats they operate to Sydney.

The airline hasn’t stated exactly when the new services will commence or even go on sale but from the press release all they’ve stated is flights will go on sale from early 2018 while the services will commence later in 2018.

Qantas are going to split 787 services between Los Angeles and San Fransisco to help the demand in California. What does this mean? Well, Los Angeles flights will get the Dreamliner a few days a week and San Fransisco will get the 787 when it’s not operating the Los Angeles flights.

The airline has said that the demand for travel and the amount of passengers connecting onto San Fransisco is high so it’s quite a logical reason for them to start a new route.

In all honesty, I would have loved to see them put the aircraft on some Asian routes as well as the A380 but I don’t think we’ll be seeing that happen anytime.

I also think this new route ‘may’ help with finding award availability to the U.S or Australia but I wouldn’t be holding your breath, it’s Qantas we’re talking about.

Hi Zac, The start of the article indicated a MEL SFO route, yet your first paragraph quotes times MEL LAX, does this mean that QF95 is MEL SFO (via LAX) ?

Hi Wayne, sorry for the confusion. QF95 (the direct 787 service) starts today. The new service to SFO starts next year and will be a direct service as well 🙂

You’ve consistently misspelled ‘San Francisco’ through out this article. Seriously, you should have stayed in school. Quitting early was a bad decision. Strongly suggest you engage a proof reader.

You have no idea why I left school so shut your mouth on that, yeah I know I have to proof read and I understand that but don’t comment on things you have no Idea about.
