Virgin’s Velocity frequent flyer program has just reached an impressive 10 million members. Considering the airline last year had 9.1 million members, that’s impressive growth.

The Velocity program is the second biggest out of our national airlines as Qantas takes first place with a total of 12 million members as of 2018.

Back before Virgin became who they are today, they were two separate carriers, V Australia and Virgin Blue. Both airlines ran different operations, but in May of 2011, it was revealed that the two airlines would become one and be named ‘Virgin Australia.’

Velocity rewards was the original name of the program back when Virgin Blue was around, but in August of 2011, the program was renamed to Velocity and this is also when Platinum was introduced into the status levels.

Per Velocity CEO, Karl Schuster:

“With around 12 million Australians going on holiday only once or less per year, we want to make it easier for them to take a break more often. Our 10 million members celebration offers announced today mean that members can move up the status tiers quicker and also share in more than 10 million Points to help them book that next flight with us.

“It’s free to join Velocity and once you’re a member you can earn and redeem with Points with over 90 partners. We have members of all ages, all around the country and we even have a few pets who earn Points on their travel!”

In the press release that Virgin sent out, they gave some interesting statistics regarding the program, here they are:

  • 1 in 3 Australian citizens living in Australia are apart of the Velocity program
  • The most significant redemption the program has seen was 25 million points in one day (that’s pretty damn impressive)
  • The oldest member in the Velocity program is 101 days old while in comparison, the youngest member in the program is just 17 days old

To help celebrate this achievement, the airline has given every member in the program ten status credits as well as the chance to win in a share of 10 million frequent flyer points which will be spread across all members.

The airline is also offering 10 points per $ for all services operated by Virgin Australia. No routes are excluded during this promotion.

To ensure you’re in the running to collect some point during this promotion, you’ll want to accept the offer on the Virgin Australia app between now and the 13th of October 2019.

As well as the airline reaching over 10,000,000 members, it’s also the 10th anniversary of the partnership between Virgin  & Etihad and to celebrate that, they’re also giving a bonus on flights, a full post on that promotion will be posted later on.

Considering the amount of attention the airline has received this year for their financial results, it’s refreshing to see some positivity as well as growth from the airline.

As they’ve now hit 10 million members, I really do think it’s time to add a status above Platinum and it would be worthwhile. A source has confirmed that it’s definitely being considered and has been discussed thoroughly, more so recently.
