Happy New Year and welcome to 2020! I’ve been a little quiet the past few weeks as I’ve been home and catching up with a lot of family and friends and haven’t been flying, but I’ve been missing the posts and being in the air, so I’m happy to be back and this will year will be filled with exciting reviews, I’ve already got a lot planned for this month.
As it’s now the start of a brand new year, a lot of people will be re-evaluating their elite status and ultimately start planning for the year ahead so you’re not rushed in a couple of months like I tend to do, yes I know, bad habit. When an airline puts out a double status credit or bonus offer, it gets exhilarating, and this is usually the best time to book flights and start preparing.
But with everything, there will, of course, be negatives and in this case, it comes down to who the offer is intended for. Majority of the offers that the airline will run are targeted, which are directed at a specific audience and usually prepared for travellers using algorithms and tracking previous travel history.

For this new offer that Qantas is running, it, unfortunately, is targeted.
Details for the 50% bonus status credits on services to/from Japan
As I do with all of these types of posts, I’ll give you a rundown of all the essential information you’re going to want to be aware of if you’re interested in this offer:
- You have to register for this promotion between now (1st of January) and the 5th of January 2020
- Travel has to be completed between now (1st of January) and the 28th of April 2020
- All cabins are included in this offer
- You have to register for the promotion via the email you received, you, unfortunately, cannot send it to anyone else to activate
- The bonus status credits may take up to 6 weeks for them to post into your account
- This offer cannot be used with any others offered by Qantas Frequent Flyer
- Flights can be booked via a third party if you choose to
Qantas A330 Business Class
How many Japan routes does Qantas operate?
Qantas has quite an extensive network in Japan, and it only continues to grow as they’ve recently announced that they will be flying to Haneda from Melbourne in the new year and will also be starting up a service to Sapporo.
Brisbane – QF61/62 departs Brisbane daily utilising both an A330-200/-300 variant.
Sydney – QF25/26 departs Sydney daily utilising their 747 aircraft, QF33/34 operates to Osaka 5 times weekly using the A330-300/-200 variant & from the 14th of December 2020, Qantas will be operating services directly into Sapporo due to the increase in passenger demand as it’s peak Ski season as well as Christmas.
Melbourne – QF79/80 operates daily to Tokyo Narita utilising their A330 variants. From the 29th of March 2020, Qantas will be launching a service to Tokyo’s Haneda airport which is much closer to the CBD of Toyko saving passengers about an hour of travel time just getting from the airport.
The commencement date for that new service also happens to be the start date for Virgin Australia’s new Brisbane service. The airline ultimately had to pull out of HND from Melbourne as it just wasn’t profitable for them, is this is a sneaky move from Qantas or just coincidence to start the service on the same date?
Overall
For these travel dates, the majority of that time in Japan will be in the winter season which in turn is often very expensive and can be a difficult place to get good value on paid flights.
As it’s the new year, be excited about upcoming promotions, Qantas often do run public offers towards the start of the year so keep an eye out, you never know when you’ll receive that prized email.
