Emirates’s New Economy Blankets Are Made Out Of 100% Recycled Plastic

I never really post about Economy class seats or offerings, but when I saw this, I had to post it. Emirates have introduced new economy blankets that are made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles. The blankets are using technology by ecoTHREAD.

Per Emirates,

The environmentally-friendly blankets were designed in partnership with Buzz, the world’s leading inflight product specialists, and are part of Emirates’ continued commitment to product innovation and sustainability. Emirates already runs a green programme on board recycling aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles, and clean paper products such as newspapers, magazines and cardboard cartons where possible.

What’s really mind-blowing about the whole thing is that each blanket is made out of 28 recycled plastic bottles, that’s pretty incredible to think about.

The new blankets are now available on all long-haul flights in Economy. This is the last blanket that has been upgraded for the airline. First and Business class recently got theirs upgraded.

Recycled PET bottles make the most wonderful soft, cozy fleece.

    This is a great choice.

What you have been describing has been around for many years. It’s called fleece. Bet you own several.

nope not fire resistant, this material can’t be made fire resistant unfortunately. I believe that since it isn’t bolted down to the actual aircraft it doesn’t have to confirm to FR regulations as it isn’t classed as equipment.

The whole recycled bottle part is a bit of a joke though as it doesn’t take into account the collection and transport of all the bottles back to China nor does it talk about the the very polluting cleaning process to get back to the raw material and the unusable waste it creates from caps and labels. But I guess saying that the product is made from recycled bottles isn’t ‘technically” a lie and gives Emirates marketing a warm and fuzzy feeling … just like their blankets.
