Review – Sheraton Grand Mirage, Gold Coast

by Zac George

A day after Christmas, I was down at the gold coast and decided it’d be an excellent opportunity to try out the Sheraton Grand Mirage which is a property I’ve been interested in checking out for quite some time. I was expecting it to be hectic and in some aspects, it was, but overall it wasn’t too bad considering a lot of people were not back at work yet and school children were still on holidays.

The hotel is reasonably priced and you’ll look to pay anywhere between $260-$480, which is pretty standard. If you want to redeem your points for this hotel, one night in off-peak season will run you 30,000 points, one standard rate will cost you 35,000 points and a one night stay for a peak stay would come to 40,000 points. To see the PointSaver and Cash + Points rates, take a look here.

The hotel itself is located in Main Beach, right near the Marina, Seaworld and 1 of 2 Versace hotels in the world. For those that are interested, the hotel is located 25 kilometres from Coolangatta Airport (OOL), 5.9 kilometres from Surfers Paradise, 4 kilometres from the Skypoint observatory deck and within 25 kilometres you can access all of the theme parks that the coast has to offer.

When I first arrived at the hotel, I was quite impressed with the overall look, it’s open, clean and works nicely. As you can see from the photos below, these are some sitting areas just outside of the reception where you can wait to be picked up – I thought that was a nice little touch and a lot nicer than only some bench seats that most hotels would offer.

The sitting areas have been placed either side, and It would fit at least two families comfortably. There was also a considerable amount of bikes when I was staying, I’m not sure if they’re part of the hotel or guests hiring them from a shop nearby, but there was a lot of them.

Taking photos close to might night was perfect at this hotel as a large percentage of guests were families and were in bed asleep, meaning it was tranquil in the reception area with absolutely minimal people around.

The lobby area of the hotel is modern, fitted with an abundance of nice and comfortable furniture and is kept very clean.

The hotel is full of artwork and interesting/quirky items throughout and it does grab your attention. In one of the hallways, there is an antique glass cabinet with odd glass items in it, Interesting nonetheless.

The hotel is only three stories high, but it’s fairly spread out and will require a bit of walking getting to the pool or reception depending on where your room is located. As my room was located directly facing the water, it was an enjoyable few minute stroll to get most places.

I was given an ocean premium room which was, in my opinion, was dated, however, that view in the morning made up for it and luckily for me the weather was beautiful both days at the hotel.

The room was quite spacious and included a desk area, a small couch and a single reading chair.

The bed itself is two king singles joined together, but I can confidently say that it was one of the most comfortable I’ve experienced in a Sheraton, it was extremely plush.

Located next to the bed is where the minibar and tea & coffee amenities are:

The minibar was stocked with a variety of beers, soft drinks, sparkling water, wine, juices, energy drinks as well as various chocolates and milk:

The temperature control in the room worked very well, and the stream of the air con was consistent and wouldn’t flicker temps which is always lovely, especially in summer.

The bathroom was nicely sized and included a two-person spa bath:

As a Bonvoy Platinum, the hotel provided some chocolate truffle balls on top of a sheet of dark chocolate:

The hotel also included a water refill station which you can use with the bottles provided from the hotel, the only other bottled water you’ll find is in the minibar which can be costly.

The pool and outdoor area of the hotel are absolutely beautiful and look relaxing and calming, as you can see the weather was brilliant.

Just past this section of water is where you’ll find the pool as well as a swim-up bar which is always cool. There is a ton of seating both on the grass area with sunbeds as well as tables closer to the bar which you can order food from. The area was bustling during the day, and the pool seemed to close at about 6:00.

If you’re looking for a restaurant, there a few fantastic options with Italian, Seafood, Tapas, Japanese and many more all available within walking distance. During peak season it’s best to book a table but off-peak you’ll have no problems being able to get a table somewhere.

Here is the Versace hotel which I would be interested in trying one day but nothing is appealing to me about the brand and the over the top use of gold, it’s a bit too much for me.

Overall

I had a fantastic stay at the Sheraton Grand Mirage and would happily return to the property. I’m a big fan of the design of the hotel and makes it quite lovely to look at. While the room I was in was a little dated, I ran into some friends who were in a suite and got to see it firsthand, and it didn’t look as worn – I guess it’s the luck of the draw at the end of the day.

The hotel is priced well and in a great location if you want to get away from the busier side of the coast. Surfers Paradise is a bustling area at times and with that can come hefty prices on hotel rooms, I’ve often seen some hotels have a minimum of $600 per night.
