During a recent overnight stay in Sydney, I decided that I’d stay at the Hyatt Regency, which is a property I’ve stayed at a few times previously yet hadn’t reviewed on the blog. The hotel is one of two that Hyatt offers in Sydney with the other being the luxurious and very well acclaimed Park Hyatt which I also haven’t reviewed yet experienced before.
The hotel is located on Sussex Street overlooking Darling Harbour as well as being conveniently located near tourist attractions like the aquarium and a short walk to the Pitt st mall.
If you want to redeem points to stay at the property, you’ll need to use 20,000 points per night as it’s category five or you can use points and cash for a rate of 10,000 points and $115 AUD. If you’re not a Globalist member and would like to have access to the great executive lounge on your award stay, you’ll need to redeem 27,000 points.
If you do not want to redeem points, you’ll be happy to hear that this hotel is often one of the best-priced chain’s hotels in Sydney, regularly half the price of most Marriott properties. Even if you’re booking last minute, the hotel can be very well priced with nights often selling for $190 per night.
The hotel itself is Sydney largest with the facility housing a total of 892 rooms which also includes suites.
The property opened in December 2016, and as you can see from the photos, the hotel has been well looked after and kept nice and clean.
This room was a deluxe king room which featured a harbour view, but as I was only staying for a short few hours, I only got to view the harbour during the night.
The room is 30sqm and comes with all your basic amenities like a flat-screen TV with mirroring technology, coffee and tea facilities and my most used item, the ironing board and iron.
When you first walk into the room, you’ll first find the closet and baggage storage area to your left.
On the right is where the bathroom is found. You’ll notice the lack of single-use amenities, and that is because, in November 2019, Hyatt announced that they would be switching to a more eco-friendly model and would instead stock rooms with larger multi-use bottles.
As you can see in the shower, there are large bottles of Pharmacopia.
After the bathroom to the left is where you’ll find the minibar as well as tea. Coffee and a range of snacks.
The minibar stocked the standard waters, beers, juices, soft drinks and wine.
The bed in the room was reasonably comfortable with the only let down being the pillows. They were just a tad on the soft side.
As you can see below, this was the view of Darling Harbour:
While the room is on the smaller side, I found it to be perfectly adequate for my short stay. Right next to the TV is where a small desk is located if you need to get some work done. Wifi is also free at the hotel.
Overall
If you’re looking to stay at a Hyatt property in Sydney but don’t want to pay crazy fees for the Park, this hotel is a fantastic option. Something that I didn’t touch on in the review and I think worth mentioning is the regency club on level 11. This lounge has to be one of the best in Sydney besides the Intercontinental as it’s got some fantastic views right over Darling Harbour and on top of that, the food and beverage options are pretty generous.
When I used to stay at this hotel as a Globalist, I was only denied an upgrade once, so that’s something to factor in as well if you’re someone who likes to get upgrades.
