Time is quickly passing and in 2 months, Virgin Australia will commence their new service from Melbourne to Hong Kong. The route is quite significant for the airline as it’s their first ‘medium-haul’ for their A330. The service is great competition for Cathay and Qantas who also operate services on that route.
As the service is soon approaching, there’s been a few questions raised and many have been about the lounges that Virgin will use. As VA has a partnership with the HNA Group and Hong Kong Airlines, it was a logical decision to use the ‘Hong Kong Airlines VIP ”Club Bauhinia” lounge in Hong Kong.
The lounge facility opened in 2014 and is located in Terminal 1. It’s right near Gate 23 and that’s supposedly where Virgin’s flight will depart and arrive from meaning it’s quite convenient for passengers.
The lounge has a large buffet area, free wifi, views over the apron, meeting rooms, and lounge chairs.
From the photo’s, the lounge doesn’t look too bad and seems appealing. I haven’t yet visited the lounge personally but If you have feel free to share what you thought of it.
As for which lounge Virgin will use in Melbourne, that’s still undecided. They have the option of the Etihad lounge, brand new Air New Zealand lounge and even the new lounges which are being built soon – more on that later.

I visited this lounge in March 2017 as a guest of Etihad, who had started its use shortly before. The staff were very nice and explained the services available, but I found the food and drink available somewhat wanting. The lounge was very busy, so finding a good seat was difficult too. But for me, the real
problem was the very long walk from lounge to aircraft steps. It seemed to take forever…..
Too bad the VS lounge is now closed. I don’t know if it could have worked, but it would be a nice tie in with their sister carrier.
