Virgin Australia has today announced that they have commenced the construction on Terminal 3 which is receiving a massive upgrade. The carrier first announced the upgrade plans in December of last year and by the looks of the press images, the upgrade will really improve the passenger experience and will somewhat feel and look similar to Virgin’s terminal in Perth.

Woods Bagot are the company behind the design of the new terminal. The company has also worked on Virgin’s T1 in Perth, Qantas’ London lounge & Brisbane Domestic Business Class lounge.

The airline has stated that majority of the self-service check-in desks, self-service bag drop machines etc, will be open by Christmas 2018 however, the website states 2019.

Once a lot of the main construction is completed, the airline will open a brand new Premium Entry facility, It’s great to see Virgin bring Premium Entry to the terminal but this is set to open in 2019 as well as a ramp connecting T3 & T4 with seamless security.

In all honesty, I think the upgrades were needed and from the press images, they look pretty impressive and modern. I’ve always been a fan of the whites and purples the airline uses so I really do think this is a nice and fresh revamp.

I’m really excited to see the upgrades once they’re completed but I’d also love to see the lounge receive an upgrade. The lounge did get some upgrades a few years ago but it’s foot traffic has risen heavily and wear and tear is starting to show a little.

Agreed with you on the Virgin Lounge at MEL! Not only is it a bit worn, try finding a seat during peak hours… After all is said and done, it is still better (mainly food offerings and barista coffee) than any of the US lounges that grant entries with credit cards.

Oooh I’m looking forward to this! This is domestic only or flying international as well?
